15 things you didn’t know about Rajinikanth’s Kabali

There is no bigger celebration in South India than the release of a Rajinikanth film. Kabali is ruling theatres with back-to-back packed shows.

Well, ever since it was announced that Rajini will be starring in Director P.Ranjith’s next, expectations started soaring and fans were hungry for every bit of information about the film.

While Ranjith’s Madras was both critically acclaimed and a commercial hit, we will have to wait it out a little more to watch Kabali’s fate.

The film might be out for public viewing, but we have some ‘behind the scene’ details about this superstar flick. Read on to know more!

1. Firstly, the fiery and super catchy song ‘Neruppu Da’ became a rage all over the country even before the film released. But the surprising fact is that the lyrics for this song were written in under 20 minutes flat by Arunraja Kamaraj. Impressive, isn’t it?

2. Ever since the movie Pandian in 1992, every Rajini film has had the ace singer S.P. Balasubramanian, lend his voice. However, Kabali is the first film in over 24 years which does not involve the singer at all.

3. Rajinikanth is known for working with known banners, directors and actors. However,Kabali is an all new team with a bunch of fresh minds working together. From the director to the cast, composers, cinematographers and even crew is new and inexperienced.

4. Initially Kabali was chosen to be a sci-fi supernatural film. Director Ranjith narrated two scripts to Rajini’s daughter Soundarya and she chose the gangster flick. That is howKabali came into existence.

5. The film is inspired from a real gangster Kabaleeshwaran, who hails from Mylapore in Chennai.

6. The superstar’s introduction in the film happens only fifteen minutes after the movie starts. This is the second film where his character is introduced so late, the first one being the 1991 blockbuster Thalapathi.

7. A major portion of the film was shot in Malaysia and the makers of Kabali have decided to release the film in Malay, making it the first Indian movie to do so. The film is also being released in Chinese and Japanese.

8. The film had no trailers! After the initial teaser release on 1st May, fans were eagerly awaiting the trailer or the music launch. However, neither of it happened. Well, maybe the makers did not want to give away the mystery factor.

9. Unlike other Rajini films, Kabali has no punch dialogues as Director Ranjith did not want the larger-than-life image to overshadow his acting.

10. Kabali’s teaser which garnered more than 1 million views within an hour of its release on 1 May has over 23 million views on YouTube

11. The audio became the top selling album on iTunes on the same day of its launch on 11 June and the top track from the album, Neruppu Da, is about to touch 8 million views on YouTube.

12. The Superstar sported his original beard for the first time on screen and shot for 75 days in his white beard.

13. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in southern cinema, the makers of Kabali have unveiled an official app. The app is designed to give hands-on information about the film without the need to browse online.

14. Rajinikanth drives James-Bond inspired Aston Martin DB5 in Kabali, one of the most famous cars in the world.

15. The film, as per media reports, has earned Rs 200 crores through satellite and distribution rights.
